Please read the passage before reading the commentary

It is election year.  Politicians want our votes.  They remind us of the great privileges we enjoy in this land.  They remind us of our ability to vote and encourage all of us citizens to vote.  They want us excited about our citizenship and our rights annexed thereto so that they gain our votes.

St Paul, however, is no politician.  He does however remind us of the special status we enjoy as fellow citizens with the holy ones, as being built into a temple sacred to the Lord and a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.  Yes, we do enjoy being citizens of the United States marching parades, having special Fourth of July events, and boosting our favorite candidates.  More, however, do we enjoy citizenship rights in God’s kingdom.

Not everyone, however, has experienced the upside of being Christian.  Some have found themselves preoccupied with sin and shame.  Christ, however, came not to condemn but to save.   The good news we preach is that Christ has saved us from sin, that he has made us citizens with all the holy ones, that we are destined for glory and honor, not for sin and shame.  We should stand up straight, with eyes looking forward, and smiles on our faces.  We have cast our ballot for the winner, Jesus Christ, and he will lead us in victory from now on.

Politicians tell us what we like to hear to get our votes for them.  Christ tells us the truth, what we need to hear, so that we make the choices that join us with Christ in his glory.  Do not listen to the politicians; they would lie for your vote.  Listen rather to Christ for he speaks the truth to lead you to true happiness and glory.
