Please read the passage before the commentary.

I have been told that heart recipients often mimic the attitudes and habits of their donors.  The one who gets the heart, gets also a piece of the donor’s life and the donor’s past becomes a part of the recipient’s present.

Jesus speaks of eating his body and drinking his blood.  This is not like cannibalism when dead people are eaten; it is like eating and drinking one who is alive and sharing in his life.  It is also like getting a heart transplant; we, the body of Christ, eat and drink the body and blood of Christ and so become more so the body of Christ.

We are what we eat.  We should be what we eat when eat and drink the body and blood of Christ.  We are Christ and we are called upon to become more like Christ.

The Father gives life to the Son.  The Son gives life to us.  The lives of the Father and the Son are endless.  Because we share the life of Jesus in the Eucharist, we share in God’s endless life even now.  My prayer is that, since we share in the heart of Christ by eating and drinking his body and blood, we also mimic his attitude and actions.
