Please read the passage before reading the commentary.
I went into the church, as I usually do. I first turned on the lights, then unlocked the inner room. I took out the service books, then the linens, then the plate and cup. After this, all I had to do was wait for the people to come.
We do things like this frequently. We enter a place and turn on the lights, survey the scene, make some adjustments, and then get to work.
God did much the same thing, separating light from darkness, controlling water and managing dirt. God, the master builder, works much the same way we do or, perhaps we should say that we build and do much as God did in creating the heavens and the earth. This should not be surprising, seeing that we are made in the image and likeness of God.
We take pride our work. Just wages and copyright laws protect our rights to compensation for work done. We find places that recognize the uniqueness and skill of our labor good places to work. We do not like to work where management does not respect our work.
We are made in the image and likeness of God. We should find the results of our labor good, just as God pronounced all God had made to be good and very good. Just as God provides for the whole of creation, so are we set over the whole of creation to govern, protect, and care for all creation in the name of God the creator.
This opening chapter of the book of Genesis in part of the prologue or preface to the entire collection of books that make up the Bible. It shows us God’s way of doing and should be a guide us in how we should do. We shall be seeing more of the prologue the next two weeks.
