Please read the passage noted before the commentary.
“My sheep hear my voice”, says the lord.
How easy is it to say that I am one of the Lord’s sheep because I listen to his voice. What can we say about those who have received baptism and then seem to have left the Church? What can we say about those who have never heard of Christ?
Is there nothing good in Hindus, Taoists, Zoroastrians. Is there nothing good in Baptists, Lutherans, Latter Day Saints, Muslims? Do we have a corner on everything good and holy?
How many gods are there? We believe that there is only one God. Those who seem to adore other gods must after a fashion be adoring our God. There is not one heaven for the baptized and another for the unbaptized. There is not one heaven for Catholics and another for non-Catholics. Sooner or later we all have to meet with God and the Son of God, Jesus Christ our Savior.
We can hasten this process by our listening to the voice of Jesus, our Shepherd. We can hasten this process when we welcome all the rest who come looking for the Lord.
Those deported to El Salvador have the voice of God. Those who seek entry into the United States from the South have the voice of God. Thos who live in fear of deportation have the voice of God. We, who are here, can see that the rest of us have the voice of God.
If we do not listen to the voice of God, how do we expect all the rest to listen to God’s voice? Just as the Father and Jesus are oner, so also all of us can be one with each other and with the Father and the Son.
