Please read the passage before reading the commentary.

Paul has been taking the Galatians to task for replacing their faith in God with law.  What is faith?  It is not a list of things for us to believe.  Rather it is relationship.  Growing up, I had good relationship with Mom and Dad.  Mom was the master healer and consoler; Dad was the strong and mighty protector.  I learned to obey them, not because of punishment but because of love for them.

Abraham had faith in God.  He had a good relationship with God.  In this he was blessed long before God gave the Israelites the law.  Paul quotes several Scripture passages that refer to Abraham’s faith.  He also quotes some that speak of curses for those who do not carry out the law.  Genesis 12:3b and 15:6 speak of Abraham’s faith.  Deuteronomy 27:26, Habakkuk 2:4, and Leviticus are the references to law.  Deuteronomy 21:25 is referenced fr the death of Jesus on the wood of the cross.

How do we gain our freedom from the law and its curse?  We gain it through Jesus Christ who took our curse upon himself.  He became our curse by being hanged on the tree of the cross.  He undid the curse by rising from the dead.  By being hanged on the cross, Jesus became cursed; by being raised from the dead he undid the curse because he is alive.

Remember that when we were baptized into Christ, we were baptized into his death and came out of the waters of baptism alive in Christ.  In Christ we are freed from the curse of the law and are made friends with God through faith.  All that remains now is for us to live faithfully in the manner of Abraham.
