Please read the passage before the homily.

My sisters and brothers,

Jesus sent his disciples two by two, taking nothing for the journey.

There were in the days of Jesus an ancient group called Cynics.  They would go from one place to another.  They would condemn the rest of the people for their sins and evilness.  They likewise did not want to stay in the houses of evildoers and preferred to stay in the public squares so as not to be contaminated by the residents.

There are modern cynics.  They do not believe the sincerity of those in power or in authority.   The Lord Jesus was not like them.

On the other hand, Jesus sent his disciples so they could bless the people and share their lives.  Jesus and his disciples were God-with-us, not a God afar off.

The Cynics came to condemn others; Jesus and his disciples came to announce God’s salvation and friendship.  The message of the Cynics was bad news; that of Jesus was good news.

The needs of our time are like those of Jesus’ time.  It is very important that the message be sent out quickly, as it was in Jesus’ time.  Those who welcome the message will support the messengers; no need for food, no need for backpacks, no need for money, no need for a second outfit.

Now, near is the kingdom of God, the Good News is running quickly.  Our is the work.  Jesus sends us out with the message.  We are not Cynics, but we are Christians with the good news for all the people of the world.  We need to move quickly.
