15 MAY 2022: HOMILY REVELATION 21:1-5a

(Please read the passage before the homily.)

In the book of Revelation, John had a vision of a new heaven and a new earth.  The old ones had disappeared.  We want to see the new heavens and earth, but we do not see them.  Instead, we see only the destruction of the old.  We are not able to see the fullness of anything, because here we can see only in part.  God, on the other hand, sees everything perfectly in its fulness.

Through the resurrection of Christ, God has made a new heaven and a new earth.  Through the resurrection of Christ, God has made us children of God.  God even now sees us in God’s, fullness, whereas we only see ourselves partially.

We have to tear down the old in order to build the new.  Christ tore down our death by his death, and now he lives his new life and we are living that same new life through our baptism into Christ.  At this time, however, we see in part, seeing our sins, failings, and imperfections, while God sees the full picture of our life in Christ and the perfection of that love in us.

God has made al things, but we see these things imperfectly.  God sees his grace while we see our sinfulness.  God sees us perfectly whereas we see ourselves imperfectly.

The new Jerusalem has come down from God like a bride adorned for her husband.  God is (therefore) married to us.  God sees the splendor of this marriage whereas we see the day after day struggles.

It is Easter.  Christ is risen from the dead and we likewise have risen with him.  It is Easter and the heavens and earth are new, as are our lives.  We shall see this fulness of our life in its perfection, when we see the fulness of Easter.
