lease read this passage before reading this homily.
In this passage David enters the scene and meets Saul. David’s reputation with his older brothers was that he was something of a nosy and smart-alecky kid, who was always on the look out for some exciting thing.
David enters the battle zone. He and Goliath exchange threats, boasts and weapons. The huge Goliath has not the speed nor the agility of the teenaged David. David undoes Goliath with slingshot and kills him with the giant’s own sword.
In our day, we have found that most people who have extra digits on the feet and hands also have mental problems. Goliath would have succeeded had David fought according to Goliath’s rules game plan, and training. Goliath was not match with a different battle plan.
We have Goliath in our lives. If we believe its scripts or its lives, Goliath will beat us in battle. The Lord Jesus came down to earth, heard about the Goliath-devil, and went after him with a new weapon, the slingshot of obedience and trust in God. He took down that Goliath and rose from the death triumph on the third day.
Goliath tries to give us the script it has practiced from the beginning. There is a new script, one for us. It says that Satan has lost, Goliath has been cut down with a slingshot and is broken and dead. We are not cocky or smart-alecky, but the Lord has completely defeated Satan and has given us a complete share in his victory.
