Please read the passage before the homily.

My sisters and brothers,

Jesus said, “The one who eats my bread will live forever.”  The crowd asked, “How can Jesus give us his flesh to eat?”.  Jesus, however, does not answer ‘how”, but says over and over, that they have to eat his flesh.  He said, “If you do not at my flesh and drink my blood, you cannot have life in yourselves.”

How can we eat the body of Christ and drink his blood?  When we celebrate the sacraments of the Church, we eat and drink the body of Christ.  When we welcome others in the name of the Lord, we eat and drink the body of Christ.  When we do our duty, we eat and drink the body of Christ.

All of us who eat his flesh and drink his blood, have an obligation to share this flesh and blood with our friends and enemies, with all the other people in the world.  The flesh and blood of Christ are not for us alone but are indeed for all people in the world.  Jesus has given his flesh and blood so that the world may have life.  He has not given his flesh and blood only for me and for you; it is that all may have life.  Holy communion is our communion with Jesus and with all the other members of his Church.  We who receive Christ have an obligation to share him with all the rest.

How can we eat the body and drink the blood of Christ?  When we listen to the word of God in the Bible, we are eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ.  When we protect the poor and needy, we are eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ.  When we celebrate the Eucharist at Mass, we are eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ.  When we serve our family, our community, we are eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ.  When we feed the hungry and help those in need, we are eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ.

How can we eat the body of Christ and drink his blood?  To eat and drink the body of Christ is to receive the totality of Christ.  Christ is in the glory of his Father and the Holy Spirit.  Christ is likewise on earth in his Church and in each one of those baptized.  When we receive Christ, we receive communion with each other and with the world.  There is no communion with Christ alone apart from the Church and all other people.

We, who are the body of Christ, eat the Body of Christ and become more the body of Christ.  Christ does not explain how but tells us to eat and drink.
