Please read the passage before reading the commentary.
Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is the one who saves. Jesus is high priest who replaces the priesthood derived from Aaron.
Aaron died and his priesthood passed on to his sons and their descendants. Christ, however, is always a priest because he dies not, but lives forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.
Melchizedek met Abram (Gen 14:17-20) and blessed him. He has no ancestry and no posterity given in the Bible. This is tantamount to saying that Melchizedek lives forever.
Christ is not a priest according to the order of Aaron, but he is a priest according to the order of Melchizedek. He has no ancestry: his origin is from the eternity of God. He has no descendants: he has called his disciples his siblings. Christ is like the mysterious figure who met Abram centuries ago; he is a Melchizedek figure.
In the flesh, Christ lived as all humans live, in the uncertainties of daily life where there is crying, distress and danger. “Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered.” Through his sharing in our nature in the circumstances of our lives, Christ has become the source of eternal life for us.
This exalted Christ, because he shared in our lowliness, is patient and compassionate towards us: we need not fear him. As he came into the world to save us, he is high priest for us in order to save us. He is the source of eternal salvation for us.
