Please read the passage before reading the commentary.
The people all spoke the same language. They also developed new technology. They learned how to mold bricks and use mortar. They could not build bigger and sturdier buildings. They decided to build a tower that could reach to the heavens, a veritable skyscraper. Interestingly enough, God had to climb down from heaven to see the tower. So much for that big tower.
Bricks, mortar, and cement allow us to shape buildings. Stones have to be used as they are or worked with difficulty into more regular shapes.
God saw the need to teach a lesson. Civilization needs more than technology for its advancement. It needs good human relationships, charity and understanding. God confused the language of the people so that they could not understand each other.
It seems easier to find new technologies than to build relationships. Without decent relationships, technology can run wild. Technology is to help us grow and cannot replace growth. Relationships have to guide our use of technology. Without relationships, our lives and our communications can become a babble of confusion and misunderstandings.
Let us join together under the one God and in the universal language of charity, kindness and respect.
