Please read the passage before reading the commentary

Today we have a reading from Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians.  He is teaching about the meaning of Christ’s death and resurrection.

If one person has died for all, then all have somehow died as well.  If Christ has died for us, then we all have died with him.  Likewise, if Christ is risen from the dead, then we all have risen with him, but all have risen with a catch.  The catch is that we can no longer live for ourselves; we must live for Christ.

From us, Christ came to know death because death comes from our human nature.  From Christ we have come to know life because Christ has united our nature and life to his nature and life.

The mother of Jesus, his other family members, his apostles, those women who followed him and took care of his needs, such as Mary Magdalene, once knew Jesus in the flesh, that is, in his body before death.  Now they know him in an entirely different way: they know him as the risen Lord.

We likewise have known Jesus in his risen body, and we live in him.  We shared our nature with him and he has shared his nature with us.  Through us he died; through him we have come to a new life.  Let us allow ourselves to be sent, to announce the good news of the resurrection to others so that we call can have a greater share in Chrost’s divine life.  We died with Christ, but now we live in him.
