Please read the passage before reading the commentary.
This passage is like a bridge between the first half and the second half of the Book od Revelation. It is the second section about scrolls. The first is chapter 5, 1-10, in which the scroll is sealed until the lion of tribe of Judah opens it. The second is today’s passage which features an open scroll.
The author of the book, known as John, is told to take the scroll and eat it. He does so and finds it like honey in his mouth but sour in his stomach. He then receives a recommissioning as prophet. He must go and prophesy to many peoples, nations, and kings.
Spoiler alert: the ultimate message of the book is that God and Christ have won, and we get to share the victory. If we have grown weary with all the strife and uncertainty of this present world, we should relax because the victory has been won and this passage renews our prophetic credentials. If we have not grown weary and tired, then we can continue proclaiming victory because we already have our credentials for announcing the good news
In other words, we Christians are called to continue to live like Christ and give witness to Christ now even as we should have been doing all along. The victory if ours because the victory is God’s and Christ’s, and we belong to God and Christ.
