Please read the passage noted before the commentary.
Do you like figs? They were considered a delicacy in the ancient world. People of antiquity very much prized figs. For us today, they can be a sign of how much God values us.
There two kind of fig trees, Only the female tree bears fruit. The male tree cannot. It takes great care and patience to raise figs.
In the parable there is a lone fig tree, one without much chance of being pollinated. The gardener, however, will tend for it generously and carefully on behalf of the delicately delicious fruit.
God is like the gardener with the fig tree. God loves sinners so much that God sent his only begotten Son into the world to save sinners. God makes sure that the sinner Hs female fig wasps to pollinate the sinner with the seed of good works and that these trees come to fruition.
Bad things do not happen to us because we are sinners. Massacres and horrible accidents do not happen because we are great sinners. These may remind us that we do not know when we shall die, but they are not punishments given us by a cruel God. God lavishes energy and care on us because we are more valuable to God than figs were to the people of ancient times.
God cares about so much that God lavishes upon us all God’s care and love so that we live fruitful lives to God’s glory. It is God who guarantees our fruitfulness
