Please read the passage before the homily.
It is all about me. My brother gets all the inheritance, but I want some of it. I have had a bumper crop of wheat this year and I can sell it on the world market and build a bigger and better storage place. I really don’t care what you have to say about it. I am not worried about dying and I have all I need for the rest of my days.
Funny thing, though, my birthday suit came without pockets and my final suit will not need pockets. I may have lived on a large estate, but in the end, I shall only need less than four by eight feet.
I can become so absorbed with myself that I miss the important events. In this part of the gospel, Jesus in on his way to Jerusalem for his death and resurrection. What is an inheritance when Christ is bringing his kingdom to us? What is an extra-large bountiful harvest when the Lord is bringing his kingdom to us?
It is not time to focus on self, but on others. The kingdom of heaven is not about me. It is about all. The coming of the kingdom challenges us to move from emphasis on self to emphasis on others. Blessed, the Lord says, are those who are invited to the supper of the Lamb. It is time to move away from the spotlight and into the crowd of those invited. Shall we leave the inheritance behind, along with the farm, and follow Jesus to Jerusalem and the Kingdom?
