Please read the passage before reading the commentary
The book dates from about 180 years before the birth of Christ. The author’s name is Jesua Ben Sira, which translates as Jesus Son of Sir. It is known as the Wisdom of Ben Sira in Hebrew, as Sirach in Greek, and in Latin as Ecclesiasticus. It is indirectly references in the New Testament. It is not considered as part of the Bible by many Protestants.
Wisdom comes from God. God has wisdom and created the world with wisdom. Wisdom, to the biblical authors, means the correct way of doing things. The wise clock maker makes good clocks. The wise bank robber knows how to pick locks.
Sirach shows us the limits of our knowledge. We cannot count the grains of sand, the drops of rain, or the depth of the abyss. We keep finding created things older many years older than we have expected them to be. We keep discovering stars systems many light years older than things previously found.
We need more knowledge. We need wisdom. All wisdom comes from God. We will never stop discovering more and more the vastness of the wisdom of God’s creation.
