My sisters and brothers,
There was a full moon yesterday. There is always a full moon hear the Second Sunday of Lent. The next full moon will be the Easter Moon and it determines the date of Easter. The sacred days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday are determined by a lunar calendar, not a solar calendar.
We entered the desert of Lent last Sunday. Deserts can be dark and terrifying. We want and we need light. Hence a full moon.
Today we have a vision of our future. The light of yesterday’s full moon announces for us that the goal of Lent is our participation in the everlasting light of God. Moses and Elijah, the two champions of the Law and the prophets, together with Peter, James and John, the three special disciples of Jesus, met Jesus and saw Jesus in his glory. They likewise heard the voice of the Father declaring that “this Jesus is my beloved Son.”
We. Like Jesus, are every much beloved sons and daughters of God. God has formed us with God’s own DNA through baptism and God wants to form all the rest of humankind in the same image of the Son. We are royal people, princes and princesses, children of God.
In the Bible the moon is faithful. Like the moon we are supposed to be always faithful. The moon is a sign of God’s faithfulness. The Lenten Moon urges us to remain faithful to God because always loves us and always forgives us our sins.From the light of the shadow of God’s cloud, the voice of the Father said, “Jesus is my beloved Son, and I will glorify him through his death and resurrection all the way to my throne.” From the light of the full moon, the voice of the Father announces that God will lead us through Lent to the glory Jesus has. The next full moon is the Easter Moon, the triumph of Christ over death and sin, and Christ shares with us this same triumph. From the fullness of the Easter Moon, God is fait
