Please read the passage before reading the commentary
God called the people rebellious children. If the people did not to be called God’s children of God, then God would treat them as a Master or boss to non-children. Either way, God would win out.
To a rebellious people God promised to send shepherds, that is to say, kings. To a rebellious people God would make Jerusalem God’s capital. To a rebellious people, God would make Jerusalem as holy as the Ark of the Covenant, for apparently the original Ark had been destroyed of stolen from Jerusalem. To a rebellious people, the loss of the Ark had been as devastating as the attitude of the rebellious people toward their God. To a rebellious people God would make the entire city the Ark of Covenant. To a rebellious people, God would give a change of heart and the rebellious people would no longer walk in their hardhearted wickedness.
This God’s way of behaving and doing, changing our hard hearts and replacing them with human hearts, hearts that can love. If we are rebellious, then God is calling us now to submit to God and let God change us into the people God wants us to be. It is up to us to respond well to God’s invitation to invite God more deeply into our lives.
God’s words to Jeremiah were meant for the people of Jeremiah’s time. We are also to understand that they are spoken for the people of our generation. After all, the word of the Lord remains forever and forever we have to respond to this word.
