Please read the passage before reading the commentary
We have been reading from the two Books of Kings. These books describe the ups and downs, the faithfulness and the lack if faithfulness for the kings of Israel (northern kingdom) and of Judah (southern kingdom). In today’s account, we see a faithfulness show itself.
The high priest Hilkiah had been cleansing the temple. He found a book of the Law and brought it to the king, who read it and was moved into action. The king took the book to heart and arranged for it to be read to the people and acted upon. The book may have been an earlier copy of the Leviticus or pat of the Torah. The book taught the people, priests and king what God was demanding of them and what they were neglecting to do. After the cleansing, the people, priests and king ratify the covenant again with God.
This is a high point, but the renewal did not last long. The people would relapse, and the Chaldeans would sack the city. We still have God’s word and God’s plan. Each day God calls us back to God and each day we must listen. God always remains faithful to the covenant; we always struggle with it. God has chosen us, and God will not forget us. We must remember God.
