27 September Luke 9:1-6

Please read the passage before the homily.

Jesus went around casting out devils, curing diseases, proclaiming the Kingdom of God, and healing the sick.  Then he commissioned the Twelve to go out to do the same four things.  They are to imitate Jesus.  They are also to take nothing extra for their journey: the clothes on their back would be more than enough: no knapsack, no bags, no money for their non-existent pockets.  They were also not to take walking sticks even though the walking stick could make their journeying easier and safer.  They were to go defenseless and poor, depending on others for their sustenance.

Between the sending of the Twelve on mission and their return, Luke has inserted a short piece about what Herod thought about Jesus.  The activity of Jesus, like that of John the Baptist, perplexed Herod.  As Herod was involved in John’s death, he likewise would have a part in the death of Jesus.

So, we go out, ourselves, to proclaim the word of God, healing, curing, proclaiming the good news and putting devil in his place.  May our journey have the success of the journeys of the Twelve.
