Some of the Thessalonian community had been behaving in a “disorderly way”, which may have been a kind of laziness. Whatever it was that they were doing was causing some discontent among the community.
There had been some discussion about when the Lord would come back, sooner rather than later, or perhaps that he had already come. If the Lord had already come or was coming soon, there would be strong incentive to stop working, to sit back and to enjoy what little time was left. Paul’s reaction was to cut such people off from free meals.
Once Paul had resolved that problem, he was ready to end his letter. He left the Thessalonians his peace and a reminder that his signature proved the authoritative nature of the letter.
We live in community in the Church and in our civil life. We have to contribute what we can for the good of the community and not slack off so as to become a burden to our communities. If each person contributes to the good of all, we should find peace in our communities
