Please read the passage before the homily.
My sisters and brothers,
In today’s gospel, to feed 5 thousand men it would cost more than 200 days denarius. This is the salary for working 200 days. In Ohio, where the minimum wage per hour is ten dollars and 45 cents, the denarius is worth m0re than eighty-three dollars a day. Two hundred denarius is worth about sixteen thousand seven hundred dollars at minimum wages.
It would be necessary to work forty weeks to but enough wheat bread for five thousand men. No problem for Jesus. He only needed five loaves of bread and two fish for all. After giving thanks, Jesus fed them all and had twelves basketfuls left over.
Christ fed five thousand men and had enough left over to feed the twelve tribes of Israel. Christ’s grace can feed all people for all generations.
Those whom the Lord feeds ought to feed the rest of the world in turn. The supper of Christ is enough for all the men and women of the world. The wheat of Christ is faith in Christ, is Christ’s saving acts, is Christ’s sacraments. The wheat of Christ likewise shows that the harvests of the world are for all peoples, not just the rich.
Whenever Jesus multiplied the loaves in the gospel, there was always more than enough. The food of the Lord and the grace of the Lord are always enough to feed the souls and bodies of all the peoples of the world. We have to be co-workers with Christ to feed the rest. Just as the twelve disciples in today’s gospel, so also we disciples of Christ have to help Christ in the distribution of food for all the rest of the world.
