Please read the passage noted before the commentary.
Peter said he was going fishing. He had been a fisherman before, but now he was returning to his former line of work. In other words, Peter seems to be resigning his position with the Lord.
Sometimes the prophets of the Old Testament, like Jeremiah, resigned their positions, and God had refused to accept their resignations. What would happen with Peter?
Peter, the professional fisherman, caught nothing that night. Sometimes even professionals need coaches. Jesus told Peter to try the other side of the boat and, behold, the net was filled to the point of breaking.
Jesus invited the fisherman, who could not catch fish, to have breakfast with him. What would Jesus do about a person who wanted to quit his job with the Lord?
During breakfast Jesus got Peter in conversation, “Do you love me?” Peter’s answer was, “Yes, I do.” Back and forth, question and answer went between Jesus and Peter. Finally, Peter gave up his plans to leave Jesus.
Jesus came to seek the lost. That is what Jesus was doing as he walked the beach and cooked breakfast over a charcoal fire. He figured Peter would be around the beach somewhere, and he would find him.
How many times have we gone fishing, and how many times has the Lord walked the streets and grilled meals so we could run into the Lord and be welcomed?
Jesus restored Peter to his position in the Church and he does the same with us. Jesus welcomed Peter, and Jesus always welcomes us.Peter the sinner became Peter the fisher of people. Jesus died, but Jesus has been raised for you and for me.
