Please read the passage before reading the commentary

Paul spoke much about the difference between God’s foolishness and weakness in his letter to the Corinthians.  He claimed that God’s foolishness and weakness are much stronger and wiser than what the world has to offer.  He proclaimed Christ crucified, which for some was a scandal and for others foolishness, but which for us is the power and wisdom of God.  He showed from the humble lives of the Corinthians how God had chosen them over the richer and more powerful people of Corinth.

Paul continued contrasting the life of the elegant and rich who had the spirit of the world with the live of Paul’s converts who had the wisdom and power of God in their lives.  Paul congratulates his Corinthians for having the mind of Christ, which is the same as having the power and wisdom of God.

In today’s passage, Paul contrasts fleshy people from spiritual people.  It is the same as the difference between the people of power and prestige versus the poor Corinthian Christian.  The fleshy people have the spirit of the world and follow the wisdom and power of the world.  When the Corinthians said, “I am for Paul” or “I belong to Apollos” and when we say, “I am for Democrats” or “I am for Republicans”, are we not as fleshly and unspiritual as the Corinthians?  Paul told the Corinthians to grow up and learn to eat solid Christian living.  He has the same message for us, that it is time we stopped making a game of being Christian and started living real Christianity.  We are all God’s building first of all, before political party or patriotism.
