Please read the passage before reading the commentary
Throughout this letter, Paul has been discussing God’s weakness and foolishness as being much stronger and wiser than human wisdom and power. Today’s passage continues this discussion. To the question how to regard Paul, as somebody self-appointed or as someone sent by God, Paul applies the same criteria. Paul is not conscious of having spoken selfishly but he knows that his opinion does not matter. Had Paul come in his own name and with his own authority, his opinion could have been counted worthwhile. On the other hand, if God’s wisdom is really wiser than human wisdom, God’s wisdom would be wiser than Paul’s. Since Paul has surrendered his wisdom and power to God’s, God’s approval of Paul is all that matters.
The same holds for now. If I, who am the teacher or preacher of this blog, am truly an agent of God’s, then I must be writing God’s wisdom and power and not my own. If I write in my own name and for my own glory, then you are free to put it aside and ignore what I write since it is not the word of the Lord.
I enjoy blogging these homilies or thoughts of the Scriptures. I think I have received some talent for writing these blogs. Yes, I should like to have millions of people reading them, but I am not writing for those who won’t be reading them, but for those whom the Lord has given me to read them. Like Paul, I am only effective as a steward of God’s message.
