Please read the passage before the commentary

My sisters and brothers,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.  The newborn King of Israel is announced, and the Magi have come to visit him.  There was in Jerusalem another king, an imposter who was very cruel.  The Hebrew people, however, kept the memory of the great King David, just as the people of the United States remember Goerge Washington and the people of Mexico remember Benito Juárez.

The people of Israel were awaiting a new king to be born in the village of Bethlehem where David had been born.  The Magi were announcing the new King from Bethlehem, a rival to Herod.  For the Magi, a cause for rejoicing, for Herod, fear.

Herod “welcomed” the announcement of the Magi and tried to kill the baby.  We likewise have to welcome this good news, but we do this by living the life of God that we have.

On the other hand, this is not a time for sadness or fear; it is a time to celebrate God’s glory which God sent to us to save us.  It is to proclaim that God has saved us according to the promise God had made to us be raising Jesus from the dead.  It is for the joy and gladness that God desires to give to all people.

Today in the heavens shines a star that proclaims to all the glory of God in all the Bethlehems of the world.  We, the Magi of today, have found the Lord and we must sing and declare all that has done through Christ to save those who are living in the world.
