A friend of mind once told me that his dad had lived for three centuries. He was born in 1898 an died in 2005. That would account for the three centuries in which he lived. Counting time in the ancient world was something like this. Paul, for example speaks of going to Jerusalem after fourteen years, which could be counting the few days before and after the middle year as whole years.
At any rate after between twelve and fourteen years, Paul went to Jerusalem to confer with the leaders of the mother church in Jerusalem about the gospel he had been preaching. James, Peter, and John recognized Paul’s work among the Gentile people and gave it their blessing.
Why did Paul mention this meeting? He had earlier spoken about the origins of the Gospel he preached, that he had received it from Christ himself, and that it was the only gospel in which the Galatians should believe. In fact, Paul had called those who preached any other gospel accursed. What did the Jerusalem Church have to say about this? It said that Paul was preaching the same gospel about Jesus Christ. The Church in Jerusalem was preaching the same gospel that Paul was preaching.
The Jerusalem Church and those who believed the preaching of Paul were not accursed, but rather blessed. Those who taught a different Gospel were the ones accursed.
What about us? Which Gospel do we preach and believe? Do we stand with Paul, James, Peter and John, or by ourselves?
