Please read the passage before mthe coommentary.

Picture a banquet hall in Jesus’ time.  It had three tables, The head table sat. the host. The other two tables stretched out at angles to the left and right of the host.  The guest of honor sat at the table to the host’s left where he could very easily converse with the host.  The rest of the guests would be set on the right and left tables according to their closeness to the host.  All those at the banquet would be reclining on their left sides and eating with their right hands.

Now, consider crawling over the feet and feet of those of lower rank for the privileged to get to their higher places.  If you have chosen a higher position than you should have, consider the predicament of crawling back over the feet and legs of those behind you as you make your way to a lower station.  It would be like changing seats in a sports arena.  It would probably be very humiliating and difficult to do.

Jesus was not so much talking about and actual wedding banquet.  He was probably referring more to the great banquet with God in glory.  We put on airs if we think that we shall have first places of honor with God.  Those favored by God are the poor, the blind and the crippled.  This would include those we often consider as sinners, such as those in irregular marriages, in different expressions of sexuality, those with addictions, and who we do not like.

We are invited to the banquet.  We do not deserve being at the banquet.  We only have a right to be there because we have bene invited.  If someone is not invited, we have not claim over them because it is only by God’s choice and invitation that we are present.
