April 11: Jeremiah 20:10-13

Please read the passage before reading the comments.

First there were rumors, the whisperings of many.  Then there was the denial because “the Lord is with me.”  Then there was the angry denunciation.  Finally, there was resolution, with praise to the Lord.

Jeremiah showed himself very human as he faced the onslaught of his enemies.  John showed Jesus acting and reacting to the danger pressing in him.  Johnn 10:31-42 gives us an example of this as Jesus crossed the Jordan to escape the danger threatening him.  It is natural for us to try to escape danger and save our lives.  Jeremiah the prophet and Jesus our Christ can encourage us as we try to maneuver the ups and downs of our existence.

I think we tend to forget that the ancient prophets, the heroes of our faith, and Jesus lived their lives with human emotion and feeling.  They all had emotions and feelings that often challenged them or surprised them and with which they had to contend.

If we have negative thoughts about Lent, about other events, and the people in our lives, we can welcome them without blame because God made us human with feelings.  We may not act on them in negative ways, but the feelings we have are natural, human, and good.

I hope that when we come to the resolution of conflicts and challenges, we can give praise to the Lord.  Until that time we will struggle, waiting for the consolation of the Lord in our lives.

We are almost entering the Holy Week, the annual celebration of the mysteries of the Lord Jesus dying and rising.  May the Lord bless you.
