Please read the passage before reading the commentary.
The Israelites had been exiled to Babylon. They were on the verge of returning to their homeland. Isaiah was sent to them. His message was that they would return home on a level and comfortable road. God would take care of them. Mothers may forget their children, but God could never forget God’s people.
Lent is something of an exile. We exile us from things we like and associate ourselves with good works and intentions. God Has brought us to this point in Lent. God wants to level the field for us so that we can enjoy the success and refreshment God has in store for us. Easter is our return from exile. Easter is our highway through pasturelands and waterways bringing us into a renewed relationship with God.
This passage is a reminder that God can and will never forget us. God’s care for us is more certain that a mother’s care for a child. This is a time of favor for us. This is a day of salvation. This is God’s covenant with us. This is a pledge of salvation. We should be singing out for joy. We should be enjoying the comfort God has for us.
Oh yes, I know that we all have moments of testing, times of struggle, moments of grief. In all these, however, God can still show us mercy and redemption. Our way with God and our way to God may seem difficult and rough at times, but God is still with us and God will never forget us.
Listen to the prophet’s words and prepare yourself for the glories and contentment to come. It is new moon time and the full moon with herald our return from Exile into the glory of the risen Lord.
