Please read the passage before the homily.

Five thousand people stopped by Jesus’ place to visit and Jesus had fed the five thousand on the mountain. Then he had crossed the sea to Capernaum
with his disciples. The people had stayed on land and when they did not find Jesus, they crossed the sea
looking for him. They were surprised to see him in Capernaum. Hence their question, “How did you get
here?”

Jesus saw from their question that they were looking for him for free food or maybe an attachment
to Jesus with no commitment, no strings attached. His response is that a person needs a commitment
because the food that Jesus gives endures for eternal life. One cannot eat it and run; one must stay and
eat forever.  We must be with Jesus for the long haul.

It is easy to eat and run; it takes energy to eat and converse. The work of God is not eating but
eating with conversation and commitment. This is the work of God, that we believe in the one whom has sent.

It is not a question of “only believe”.  It means to put complete trust in God.  A child has faith, that is, a trust in the parents,  Spouses marry because they trust one another.
