The story of the lame person cured by Peter and John has been narrated and commented on since Wednesday.  It will conclude with our reading on Monday.

The prophet Isaiah had spoken of a time when the lame would leap like deer (Isaiah 35:5-6). Luke has described the healing of this lame person in terms that recall the words of Isaiah.

Peter insists that the miraculous cure comes not from Peter and John, but from the Lord Jesus.  It is this attribution to Jesus that has the Jewish authorities upset.  These authorities have arrested and detained Peter and John.  It is now the time for the hearing.

The high priest’s entourage asks how this miracle came to be.  Since the prosecutors did not like the response, perhaps they should not have asked the question.  The question, however, demanded a truthful response, and Peter was ready to supply it.

Peter’s testimony is that the leaders had rejected God’s anointed, Jesus of Nazareth, but that God had raised him from the dead.  Jesus was the cornerstone (cornerstones were used line up the walls of buildings and keep the construction safe and perfect).  God had intended Jesus to be the cornerstone that would keep our lives lined up and well-built.  Only through Jesus, the cornerstone, can anyone find safe construction and a safe life.

The testimony of Peter serves to argue that he and John had done nothing and should be freed.  It is also a call the leaders to repentance.
