Please read the passage before the commentary.
We are all descendants of the first Man and Woman, whom we shall call the First Adam. First Adam was made in the image and likeness of God’s Word. We, however, are made in the image and likeness of God and of that first Adam. Like that Adam, we shall all die. We write wills because we cannot take anything with us into the grave. We have inherited death because we have inherited that sin. We die because of our sins. When we die with Jesus through baptism, we leave behind us all our sins as things belonging to us,
Jesus has come, in the likeness of that first Adam. He has inherited the first Adam’s death even though he is sinless. He died, not because of his sins, but because of our own sins.
God’s Word is life itself. When God made the first Adam in the image and likeness of God’s Word, God gave him life because God had given them freedom from sin in God’s Word.
When God’s Word took on human flesh in Jesus, God’s Word was able to die even though God’s Word was without sin. Jesus, God’s Word took upon himself the likeness of the first Adam and destroyed our death by dying.
