April 30 Acts 5:17-26

Please read the passage before reading the comments.

This passage reminds me, in a way, of comic routines, such as Abbott and Costello, where, if anything can go wrong, it definitely will go wrong.

We already know that the apostles will win, but the authorities do not understand this.  They have made their plans and briefed themselves on their strategy: arrest them and jail them overnight to give them taste of punishment; then call for them in the morning for the trial and the sentencing.

Perfect plans, except for one thing, God had other plans.  God sets the apostles free and sends them back to the temple to teach.  There the authorities would find the apostles, unjailed and free to preach the resurrection of the Lord.

So, we often make plans without consulting the Lord, and sometimes we find that the Lord has other plans for us.  We go about wheeling and dealing, with nary a thought about how incongruous and silly we must seem to God.  We plan AFGPQVWX, but God has in mind ABCDEFGH.  While we argue about who is on first, God is hitting homeruns.

We all need to listen to God.  We all need to consult God in our plannings.  We need to consider what God wants us to do, not what we want to do.  We consult God in prayer, and we consult God by listening to the advice of people known to God.

Listening to God and following God’s way is never silly or demeaning.  Rather, it is life, happiness, and glory.
