Please read the passage before the commentary.

This is the first week of the Easter season.  The season stretches for fifty days, seven days (=a week) times seven plus a day to equal fifty days (a week of weeks plus a day).  It ends of Pentecost, which means 50 in Greek.   The commentaries this week with be about the events of the first week of Jesus’ resurrected life.

Today Mary Magdalene and another Mary see the risen Jesus who sends them to the apostles.  Mattthew also reports jhow the guards who were supposed to guarding the tomb were paid to spread false rumors about how the disciples stole the body of Jesus.

The passage if effect gives us two witness stories to the resurrection, one by the two women and the other by the lying guards.  Since the guards know that their message is false, they are inwardly attesting to the truthfulness of the resurrection.

I wonder if at times, at least, our lives broadcast a practical denial of the resurrection of Jesus.  If we truly believed in the resurrection, I wonder how this would change our behavior.  I hope that the Easter newness in our lives radiates a new era for the human race personally, domestically, regionally,  nationally, and internationally.  God bless us all with peace.
