Please read the passage before the commentary.
I am not an expert farmer or gardener. I know some things and others I do not. I do know that the more seeds we sow the more crop we can get. The more together they are, the more crop they can bear. The more isolated each seed, the less each can bear. The closer together each is to the other, the more pollination can occur.
The process of planting seed and growing crop demands that the seed die. Unless the grain die it remains just a grain. It is in itself infertile; in its willingness to die, to change, to be modified, it is fertile and rich.
So it is with human life. If we can afford to stay home all-day watching TV and if we do only this, then we have wasted our lives, and lost them in our laziness. Even the rich and wealthy have to work: it is part of our dying that enables us to live and have meaning.
So it is also with our religious life. Jesus came down from the Father to show us how to live. By dying he experienced life, which he passes on to us. If we follow his example and learn what he teaches us, then we can graduate with high honors. Then where Jesus is we shall be and the Father will honor whoever serves Jesus.
God knows farming. He created farming. God put dying into the cycle of living; it is God’s way of falling to the ground to bring forth much fruit. It is also our way to be like God.
