Moses died. He had led the people out of Egypt and was their leader in the desert. The Scripture says that he was not permitted to enter the land because of sin. It is also true that Moses had a gret charism for le adding the people in the wilderness, but a different set of charism was needed for leading the people into conquest and resettlement.
Moses was permitted to see the whole land of Israel, but not to enter it. Although there was no one to equal Moses, there needed to be a new leader. Joshua was appointed and becomes Moses’ replacement.
The name Joshua is a variant of the name Jesus. Joshua and Jesus share the same name. If Joshia was to lead the people into the conquest and settlement of the Promised Land we should see Jesus as having the same charism to lead us into the Promised Land with his Father. We are journeying though our deserts, our passage towards the Promised Land. Jesus is our leader, who had done this before and knows how to lead us. Let us follow him.
