Male and female he created them. How many genders did God create? The answer is all of them. When the biblical authors think of the first and last in a listing, or of two opposites, they are including everyone in the listing. We do the same thing when we speak of knowing a subject inside and out or having knowledge of something from A to Z.
In the context of creation, when God made them male and female, we are to understand that God made them all, not just the first and the last. Science tells us that the XX and XY chromosomes determine female and male. There are also people with other configurations of chromosomes, such as XXY and XYY, hermaphrodites and others who are not with the XX and XY chromosomes God has made them all and God loves them all.
In the context of relationship, God calls us to respect each other and not to take advantage of others. In the sphere of marriage, we are called express that relationship in mutual love and in this way to proclaim in sacramental ways the oneness of God within the personhoods of God and with all of creation.
When God created each of us God called each of us into relationship with God and with each other. Our task is to live out this calling to its fulness, in marriage or beyond marriage, however God has called us. God has made us and God does not make junk. We are valuable because God made us. Our value does not consist in how our chromosomes are arranged or on how we think of ourselves. From the beginning of creation until now God continues to make people with differing chromosomal patterns and God continues to see that all is good.
