It was pick on Jesus time. He had silenced the Sadducees and it was time for Pharisees to get in on the action. Scholars had been debating the greatest commandment for years. The Pharisees wanted to test Jesus and asked his opinion on the greatest commandment.
These controversies are placed towards the final chapters of the gospel. The serve as a prelude to the Passion and Death of Jesus. Jesus shows his true love for us and for God by undergoing his Passion and Death. He encourages us to take up his cross and follow him. How well do we do this/
