We begin a series of readings from the Gospel according to Luke. Luke emphases Jesus as the faithful Jewish person announcing good news to the poor and welcoming even pagans into his life.
Jesus gives homily in his hometown and emphasizes the work of the prophets Elijah and Elisha among the pagans. The townspeople are upset by this and try to run him out of town.
Familiarity breeds contempt or, at least, makes it hard to recognize the gifts that we have or that those close to us have. A prophet has no honor in his own household. Often we do not recognize our own gifts and talents.
Jesus comes into our lives, proclaims his presence and his ability to heal or dis-eases, enlighten our lives, and gives peace to our hearts. How do we recognize him, as one who bores because we think we know him or as one who excites as he did the Syrian leper or the widow of Zarephath?
