Please read this passage before reading this homily.
We have little idea of distance in the Bible. I live near Dayton, Ohio, and I recently travelled to Niagara Falls in Ontario, a distance of about 450 miles, less than a day’s journey. Paul went overland from Corinth to Ephesus, well over 450 miles apart, without benefit of automobiles or planes. For Paul it was hardly a day’s journey and probably a journey of a month or more.
At Ephesus, Paul met a disciple of John the Baptist. John had come proclaiming a baptism of repentance. His task ad been to prepare the way for the coming of the Christ. John’s disciples and his movement had survived him and seems to have threatened the spread of news of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
Paul had to instruct Apollos and after Apollos was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, Paul laid hands on his for him to receive the Holy Spirit. Paul spent three months in Ephesus.
Paul would revisit Ephesus and Corinth on his third missionary journey, which would end in Jerusalem with his arrest and trial.
Niagara Falls is considered a Wonder of the World. The travels of Paul and the other apostles of the Lord Jesus are also wonders of the world. Paul travelled by land and at times by sea, without benefit of GPS, automobiles, and other modern means of communication and travel.
