Please read this passage before reading the homily.
This birth of Jesus did not suddenly happen, nor did it happen in a vacuum, nor was it an isolated event. It was something for which we were prepared, it happened in the context of world geography and world history, and it was part of God’s dealing with humans from the word go and will continue beyond the end of our days.
The Word that we identify as Christ was in the beginning. God created the world through the word because God said, “Let there be light” and light was made. God made us in God’s own image and likeness, which means that God’s word is part of our makeup. This word of God, which has been in the world in many ways, took on human flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we have seen his glory.
God not only made us, but God also took on our human nature and became one of us. God became one of us so that we could become one with God. Our birthdays are connected with God’s birthday. Our destiny is to be completely one with this God who has become one with us.
God lay in a crib. We lay in cribs. God grew up and we have grown. God is revealed through human beings because God took on our flesh, the flesh of human beings. We are called to reveal ourselves to God by living the life of God that we have received. The birth of Christ happens every day and every time we fulfil our callings to be mothers, brothers, sisters and spouses of the Word of God made flesh and dwelling in our midst.
