We have many rules, such as washing your hands before a meal and requiring employees to was after having used the restroom. Will not washing hands or not takin a daily shower defile us? How many times a day do we need to brush our teeth?
Some of what Jesus was doing was to change society; others were to redefine morality. We do not like change, whether it concerns externals and what resides deep within us. The Second Vatican Council called for changes, which we could consider necessary, but not everybody was ready for change. Our society has changed much over the past fifty years, but not all politicians appreciate the changes.
We live in times of change. We are called to make the changes in our lives that we should be making, to analyze what we do and to rid ourselves of anything that defiles us.
