Please read the passage before the commentary.

We have begun the season of Lent.  The passage today focuses on the three primary symbols of the repentance we should be practicing during Lent.  The three practices are almsgiving, prayer, and fasting.

When we think of almsgiving, we think of giving money.  People who live with us or who work with us need alms, but not money.  They need our time and energy.  Children love attention from older people, such as parents and older siblings.  New people on the job often need encouragement from the more veteran workers.  A kind word and time shared can be the almsgiving we need to practice.

Prayer need not be hard.  If we should pray for our enemies for the days of Lent, we should see a change in the relationships we have.

The biggest and the best fasting we can do is to feast from evil so that others can feast on goodness.  This Lent we have our work cut out for us in almsgiving, prayer and fasting.
