February 27, 2026: Matthew 5:20-26

Please read the passage before the commentary.

I met a new word today, hypertheses, or supertheses. It means over and above.  As an example, Moses said not tio kill, but Jesus says n ot to be angry with your brother, which is much more than what Moses demanded.

Let us not concentrate on externals.  Jesus wants us to get to the heart of the matter.  Oner person kills another because their relationship lacks heart.  Anger and harsh words kill relationships or at least indicate that the relationship has deteriorated.

Spouses have often killed their spouses after the marital relationship has withered.  Going over and above what Moses said can safeguard relationships and save lives.   The one who is over and above Moses is over and above sin and death.
