Please read the passage before the commentary.
In Mark 3:20-21, Jesus’ family set out to take charge of him. At the same time, Jesus was gathering his inner circle of disciples (3:13-19), preaching to the crowds from a boat while his inner circle is with him on the boat (4:1-9). In today’s reading, visits his home people, come to their synagogue, and preaches to them.
We can consider this as an invitation to be a part of Jesus’ family. He was met with a lack of trust. The people considered his teaching as new and asked where he got it. They did not trust him, and he was amazed at their lack of faith, their lack of trust.
It is trust that makes us members of a family: family members must trust each other for the family to work. Without trust the blood relationship loses its meaning and strength. It is this basic trust in Jesus as the Christ and Son of God that secures our relationship with Christ and God in the Church. Without this trust, we have no part in the life and work of Jesus. Jesus has made his Church his family. He trusts us, butdo wde trust him?
