Please read the passage before the commentary.
It is a tale of two kings. One sends his disciples out to announce good news; the other sends his disciples out to imprison those who give others hope. One feeds the people with a banquet on a mountain; the other turns a birthday party into a grotesque scene of death. One speaks the truth in calm freedom; the other is afraid of rumors. One refuses to be called king, the other pretends to be king. One walks in freedom, the other fears his base, his family and his conscience. One’s life story is called good news, the other’s is forgotten for its bad news.
It is a tale of two kings in us also, one a wannabe and the other a servant, greed vs responsibility, pride and humility, vanity vs virtue. The one we are called to now lies in hope for the fulness of time; the one that tempts us is the glamor of the passing things of this world. Jesus lived the first; Herod lived the second.
Which will we daily choose for our way? May we choose the way of good news and reject the way of bad news.
