(Please read the Scripture passage before reading the homily.)
Jesus said he had not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.
Our laws do not make people love another. No law can do that, but our laws can stop people from hurting one another. Sometimes our laws protect the rights of some, but infringe upon the rights of others. This is not the place to disparage laws or order. It is a time to make an important point: that we need more than laws.
What perfects law and brings it to fulfillment? Love does. Civil laws do not mandate love because love lies beyond the scope of civil laws. Civil laws can only look at and see externals, but cannot see the invisible.
Jesus can command love because Jesus can see beyond the appearances and see what lies inside each person.
