Please read this passage before reading the homily.
My sisters and brothers,
Christ came to complete the law, not to abolish it. The fulness of the law is Christ. Christ likewise is the fulness of Israel, the new Israel. The whole of the law finds its complete purpose in Christ.
Jesus brings the law to its completion by his total obedience to the will of his Father. Jesus likewise gives us the power to complete the law as he himself has done.
The law forbids killing because killing destroys the life of the community. The law forbids adultery because the family is the basic unit of the community. The law forbids divorce except in special and serious situations to protect the family. The law forbids oaths because truth is the foundation that keeps the community together.
Our actions of killing, adultery, divorce and perjury flow from our deliberate and intentional thoughts. We need to restrain our anger, our lust and our desires.
Jesus brought these commands to their fulness by forbidding the thoughts and devices that lead us to the actions of killing, adultery, divorce and perjury.
The life of the new Israel, which is the life of Christ, is a life of respect and love to the wholeness of life, family and truth. Jesus is our life, our family, our truth. Through the obedience of Christ, we have the power to persevere in that love that allows us to fulfill the intensions of the law and be other christs for the world. Like Jesus, we have not come to abolish he law, but to bring it to fulfilment.
