HOMILY: 12 June 2022 (Romans 5,1-5)

(Please read the Scripture passage before the homily.)

We have celebrated the festival of Easter and the resurrection of Christ.  The resurrection of Christ is the gift of the Holy Spirit.  The resurrection of Christ makes us just and holy.  Because of the resurrection, we can receive the gift of baptism, the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Through the mystery of Easter (the paschal mystery), we have the glorious life of Christ.  Despite this, we have troubles in our community.  The war in Ukraine, the refugees at our borders, the lack of water, the drought and the famine on the earth touches each one of us.  Through the resurrection of Christ, all of us are united together with all the other peoples of the world.

We share with the rest of the world their troubles which bring forth patience and hope.  The trouble of one touches all the rest of us.  No one can exist for oneself, but only for the community.  The hope that the community has, gives us hope.

St Paul says that everything good that we have comes from the love of God for us.  He says that God has poured God’s love into us through the Holy Spirit, whom the same God has given us.

We do not have to worry about our love for God because everything that we have received first comes to us through God’s love for us.  God loves us first and gives us God’s gifts and presents.  Secondly, we love God.  We cannot love God unless God first loves us.

We are celebrating the solemnity of the Holy Trinity.  We are celebrating the Trinity because God the Father has sent the Son through the work of the Holy Spirit to save us.

It is certain that God has made us holy through faith.’  It is certain hat God has poured forth God’s love into our hearts and has given us the Holy Spirit.  It is certain that we are able to have in our hearts the hope of sharing the glory of God.
